On busy summer evenings that queue on the exposed headland can back up as the sunset coaches arrive from Athens, so coming with your ticket already in hand saves the wait just as the light turns golden.

Entry to Cape Sounion is timed by the hour on the operator's ticketing system. You choose the date and an hourly time slot, and your ticket is valid for a single entry during that hour on that day. Just arrive within your slot window and show your mobile ticket at the gate; last entry is about 30 minutes before closing.

Book the hourly slot that ends at or just before sunset for your date, so you are already on the headland as the sun drops into the Aegean and the columns glow. Sunset falls late in summer — often after 20:00 in June and July — and much earlier in winter, so the right slot changes through the year. Full admission to the Cape Sounion archaeological site: the Doric Temple of Poseidon with its surviving columns, the temple terrace with its sweeping views over the Aegean, and the remains of the nearby Sanctuary of Athena Sounias on the same headland. It is entry to the site on the cape itself.

We send your ticket to your email as a mobile ticket once your booking is confirmed — there's nothing to print, just show it on your phone at the gate. You'll also receive a short 5-minute audio history to listen to on the drive down to the cape.

Cape Sounion is about 70 km southeast of Athens and there is no metro or train, so you travel by road. Options are a KTEL regional bus (around 1.5–2 hours), an organised sunset coach tour, or a taxi or hire car (about an hour and a quarter). The scenic coastal road down the Athenian Riviera is the classic approach.

For most visitors, yes — it is one of the most beautiful spots in Greece, a white marble temple on a sea-cliff that has drawn travellers for two centuries. The late-afternoon light and the sunset over the Aegean are the highlight, and the round trip from Athens makes a memorable half-day excursion. Come for a late slot and allow time for the drive each way.

Most visitors spend about 45 minutes to an hour and a half on the headland itself — enough to walk up to the Temple of Poseidon, circle the columns, take in the views and see the Athena sanctuary. If you come for the sunset, allow extra time to settle in before the light turns, plus roughly 1.5–2 hours each way for the journey from Athens.

You climb to the summit of the cape where about fifteen of the Temple of Poseidon's original Doric columns still stand in gleaming marble, framing the sea and sky. The terrace gives sweeping views over the Aegean and the islands of the Saronic Gulf, and a short walk away lie the remains of the Sanctuary of Athena Sounias.

No. The standard entry ticket is not personalised and needs no passport or name — just show your mobile ticket at the gate. (Reduced and free-entry categories set by the operator may require ID at the gate; our ticket is standard full admission.)

Only partly. It is an open cliff-top site with uneven natural ground, gravel paths and gentle gradients up to the temple. Some viewpoints near the entrance are reachable, but the temple terrace sits on rock. Ask staff at the entrance on arrival about the current accessible route.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and sturdy non-slip shoes for the rocky ground. The headland is exposed to sun and sea wind with little shade, so a light layer for the breeze after sunset is useful. Large bags, food and drink other than water, tripods and drones are not permitted on the site.

Yes — the site is open daily, year-round. Only the daily hours change with the season: the site closes around sunset, so it stays open much later in summer than in winter, with timed entry by the hour and last entry about 30 minutes before closing. Hours can change on public holidays, so confirm on the day.
